Gross profit margin, even 100% can leave a small unit  production of jams. This is a low cost investment, which can also be combined for the production of sauce.

At the same time, the export prospects of processed fruits are impressive. Only in Russia the increase of Greek exports of processed fruits (canned food, jams) in the first half of 2012 amounted to an incredible percentage of 220.54%.

THE  Ependysis Business Consultants presents the steps  to start such an activity. The production of jams and the utilization of fruits is an alternative solution, for the creation of small household technical production units by families as well as by families that produce fruit.

The preparation of jams requires four basic ingredients:

  • Fruit

  • The acid

  • The sugar

  • The pectin

As for the building facilities, these  should be designed according to the requirements of the products produced by Community / national legislation, the rules of good hygiene and industrial practice, and then the plans should be submitted to the relevant Directorate of Rural Development together with an application for establishment permit, for their pre-approval .

In  drawings should show the premises, receiving, processing, storage & marketing equipment, production ancillary equipment, production equipment service networks and non-productive fixed equipment.

At the same time, a report should be submitted describing the technical specifications of the construction materials of the installation, the basic equipment, the technical description of the production operation and the products of the installation.

Once all of the above is done, the licensing authority will  pre-approved, and the interested party will receive from the licensing authority the establishment permit.

After the completion of the installation and the installation of the machines, the interested party will have to submit a second application for an operating license to the licensing authority.

Equipment, profits and aid

The cost of the production equipment of only a small unit amounts to approximately € 30,000 and indicatively includes a kettle with stirrer, pump, container filler, container closure, refrigerator or freezer for the fruit used, measuring instruments (Brix).

The advantage of such a unit, with small additions to the equipment, is that it can also produce sauces and thus increase the number of products produced.

The profit percentage is obtained if one calculates that a glass package of 450 gr. has a cost of materials and packaging at 0.8 euros and is sold in supermarkets around 2.25 euros. If the energy and labor costs are taken into account, then it leaves a profit margin of even 100%, without being absolute since it depends on the fruit production period.

For those who want to set up manufacturing companies,  should be aware that such companies are usually subsidized, both by programs of the Ministry of Development, the Investment Law, and Regional Operations  where  concern  the support of manufacturing companies in percentages up to 65%, depending on their area of activity and their size.

Eligible Costs of these programs are usually:

  • Landscaping.

  • Construction or improvement of real estate.

  • Procurement and installation of new mechanical equipment, including computer software and laboratory equipment, to the extent that it serves the operation of the unit.

  • Biological treatment plants not as an individual action, but as part of the overall investment.

  • Purchase of new vehicles: a) internal movement for the needs of the investment (forklifts, hoists, etc.), b) isothermal tanks, necessary for the transport of milk to the standardization, processing area and c) purchase of new refrigerated vehicles only for the Aegean islands.

  • General expenses up to 10% of the total budget, such as engineers 'and consultants' fees and licenses in addition to the above expenses.

  • Costs for feasibility studies, costs for the creation of a recognizable mark (label) of the product, obtaining patents, market research for the shaping of the image of the product (packaging, labeling).

  • Obtaining quality certificates from competent organizations (ISO, HACCP, etc.).

  • Purchase of fax, telephone installations, intercom networks and computers, including word processing, software telescripteurs, photocopying and on-site security systems.

  • Construction of the storage house of the facilities up to 50,000 euros.
